Senior horses

My Aunt and Uncle's 30 year old gelding, Jimmy, couldn't be doing better. My brother's been riding him, and, not being as sensitive a rider as my sister and I, he tends to drive him like a four-wheeler. But, believe it or not, Jimmy loves it. He'll lope for practically half an hour straight, while no one else can even get him to break from a trot! He's looking like a horse half his age. Beneath his photo is a comparison to a couple of my grandpa's senior mares, both of whom were turned out into his pasture several years ago for their retirement. So, just because your horse may be past his or her prime, it doesn't mean it's time for retirement. Listen to your horse!
